Default I don't get the discrepancy in versions

I don't understand the discrepancy in versions in Mediawiki. The latest version from Mediawiki.org is 1.15. But I routinely see references to Mediawiki 1.8 or 1.9. Why the discrepancy?

Those are older versions of the software. Not everyone upgrades when a new version is released.

wow, so 1.9 comes before 1.15. Oh, wait, maybe I misinterpreted. Is 1.9 really like 1.09, so that 9 comes before 15? Not 1.90?

It's not a decimal number, it's a version number. Set mathematics aside. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softwar...dering_systems for more.
