Can I configure MW to allow File: linkes as well as Media: and Image:?

If I upload a file I can access it using either Media: or Image: links. But what if the file isn't a multimedia / image file? Then the tags don't really make sense.

How can I add a File: type tag?

You'd have to change a bunch of code.

A future release of MW will change the default namespace from Image to File. This might change the way files are referred to in wikitext, but don't quote me.
